Acapulco has been inhabited since 3000 B.C. Archaeological excavations at La Sabana, in the hills outside Acapulco, have uncovered Nahua artifacts dating back some 2000 years. The Nahua was the tribe that preceded the Aztecs.

The rate of exchange against the US dollar fluctuates daily. Most hotels have a currency exchange desk, but you will get the best rates at banks and exchange houses. 12. How much gratuities are standard?

Restaurant tipping is 15 to 20 percent for good service and is expected. Porters should get approximately US$1.00 per bag; hotel maids should get US$.50 to US$1.00 per day. Taxi drivers do not expect tips unless you hire them for several hours or if they handle luggage for you. Don't forget to tip your guides, washroom and parking attendants,even kids who watch your car.

* The Cross at La Paz Chapel (Chapel of Peace) has become a well known landmark on the landscape of Acapulco.

* Fuerte de San Diego, this pentagon shaped fort was built in 1616 atop a hill just east of the old town to fend off attacks by pirates and the theives that prowled the seas marauding treasure-laden vessels.

*· La Quebrada Divers one of Acapulco's most famous spectacles, La Quebrada is notably the number one attraction. Every afternoon, brave (or maybe crazy) young men dive from La Quebrada's craggy rock cliffs. It is crucial that the jump concurs with the incoming waves that will lessen the impact of the dive and keeps the diver from landing in the shallows.
