Description |
The
deviation that leads to the archaeological zone of Kohunlich
is in the kilometer 60 of the highway number 186 that goes
from Chetumal, in the state of Quintana Roo to Escárcega,
in the state of Campeche.
The
ancient name of the area is still ignored but the current
name Kohunlich comes from two English words:"cohune"
for (a palm tree native to Belize) and "ridge" for
"cohune ridge" or (the ridge where the cohune palm
grows). The archaeologist Victor Segovia who explored the
zone in the 60s, transcribed Cohume Ridge for Kohumrich; then,
it became Kohunlich.
The
masks of Kohunlich are the focus of attention and the
reason for the site's fame. They reflect the complexity of
ancient Maya society and are superb works of art.
