This is the favorite place for the citizens of the Capital and the surrounding to do their shopping or simply visit, especially on Sundays. Located to the southeast of the Federal District, Xochimilco "Place of flowers", has an attractiveness that has given it this international fame to be the only chinampas in the world; an old and very productive agricultural technique used by the xochimilcas from the prehispanic time and consists of an artificial islands created on the lake by superposing layers of trunks, earth, mud and roots attached by lianas and in which "ahuejote"-small tree- are planted to fix the chinampas when developing their roots. Their distribution has formed channels that are used as traffic roads to the market, vegetables are cultivated there. Presently, 176 km of channels exists, of which 14 of them are especially for tourists and they can be traveled by small boat, which the villagers decorate with floral arrangements of a singular beauty. Along the itinerary, the visitor will enjoy the charm of the salespersons in their small canoes offering all kinds of souvenirs and other crafts with mariachi or the marimba onboard to liven up the journey.
