Mascota


Description

Established around 1592, this verdant valley at 4000 feat is rich in agricultural products such as wheat, rice and corn. The name is derived from a Nahuatl word ´Mazacolta´ meaning ´Place of Deer and Snakes´. It is the centre of a fertile agricultural valley, surrounded by mountain slopes filled with pine and oak trees. Mascota is an authentic Mexican village with colonial haciendas, paved streets, a central plaza and an impressive church dedicated to ´The virgin of Pain´, which took more than 100 years of construction and finished in 1880.

The green valley is located at an altitude of 1310 meters and has an semi- templado climate which is good for the plantation of many agricultural products like grain, rice, corn, oranges, lemons, avocado, grapes, sugar-cane, and ´Agave Lechuguilla´, which is the basis of sugar for Raicilla, the typical alcoholic drink from this region, which is used for makin the traditional drink called “ raicila”

The production of Raicilla is one most traditional arts, and a visit to Mascota is not completed without having tasted the favorite drink of this village.

Mascota, together with Talpa, is also the land of horses. People from all over Mexico and beyond come here to buy horses and many also bring their horses here to be trained. The number one topic, regardless of a person’s occupation, is the fine horses of this region.
