Established
around 1592, this verdant valley at 4000 feat is rich in agricultural
products such as wheat, rice and corn. The name is derived
from a Nahuatl word ´Mazacolta´ meaning ´Place
of Deer and Snakes´. It is the centre of a fertile agricultural
valley, surrounded by mountain slopes filled with pine and
oak trees. Mascota is an authentic Mexican village with colonial
haciendas, paved streets, a central plaza and an impressive
church dedicated to ´The virgin of Pain´, which
took more than 100 years of construction and finished in 1880.
The
green valley is located at an altitude of 1310 meters and
has an semi- templado climate which is good for the plantation
of many agricultural products like grain, rice, corn, oranges,
lemons, avocado, grapes, sugar-cane, and ´Agave Lechuguilla´,
which is the basis of sugar for Raicilla, the typical alcoholic
drink from this region, which is used for makin the traditional
drink called “ raicila”
The
production of Raicilla is one most traditional arts, and a
visit to Mascota is not completed without having tasted the
favorite drink of this village.
Mascota,
together with Talpa, is also the land of horses. People from
all over Mexico and beyond come here to buy horses and many
also bring their horses here to be trained. The number one
topic, regardless of a person’s occupation, is the fine
horses of this region.
