Location
1 1/2 hours by boat north of Cancun

Also known as 'island of the birds' this bird sanctuary and aviary lies 1 1/2 hours by boat north of Cancun, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico. The only permanent residents are the 100 plus species of tropical birds, including pelican, gull and frigate, as well as several types of reptiles and sea turtles. Spend the day exploring this "deserted tropical paradise".

In addition to the white sandy beaches, framed by red and black mangroves and thousands of coconut palms Contoy, which means "pelican" in the Mayan language, was declared a National wildlife reserve in 1961 and has a small museum and and a five-story tower that offers an impressive view of the surroundings. In an effort to preserve the delicate ecological balance of this island Wildlife Reserve, only a limited number of people are allowed to visit the island. For this reason it is best to make reservations in advance.
